Duszynski leads second-period surge as Norwich ousts Salem State

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Chris Duszynski scored twice and added an assist in a five-goal second period for Norwich in a 8-2 victory over Salem State on Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Travis Janke and Nick Pichette also scored two goals each for the Cadets (20-6-3), who ran out to a 3-0 lead before Salem State scored late in the first.

But Norwich put the game away in the second period, scoring five times on 14 shots on goal.

Duszynski scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season 63 seconds apart to make it 5-1, and Erik Lyrvall, Janke and Pichette added goals later in the period.

The Cadets advance to face the winner of Thursday’s Geneseo-Nichols game, which was postponed Wednesday because of a snowstorm. That game Saturday would take place at Norwich if Nichols wins or at Geneseo if the Knights win.

Norwich’s Chris Czarnota stopped 11 of 12 shots he faced before giving way to Parker Carroll for the final 10:39.

Ryan Sutliffe made 27 saves for the Vikings (16-10-2).
