Senior forward Mike Carosi of Bowdoin has been named the 2001-02 NESCAC Men’s Hockey Player of the Year. Carosi, who led the Polar Bears to the second seed in the conference tournament, leads the NESCAC with 46 points on 13 goals and 33 assists. Two seasons ago, Norwich was picked first in the USCHO Preseason Poll. Norwich won the national championship. Last season Plattsburgh was picked first in the USCHO Preseason Poll. Plattsburgh won the national championship. This season, the Cardinals are once again on top of the Poll, looking to repeat as the champs.
The presidents of the 11 members of NESCAC have agreed to suspend for 2001-02 the rule prohibiting NESCAC teams from accepting NCAA at-large bids.
Kristin Steele is Connecticut College’s new women’s coach. She replaces Bernie Cassell, who served as the team’s interim head coach during the 2000-01 season. Tufts forward Jason Boudrow has been selected as the ECAC/CCM Player of the Year, in voting announced today. The junior helped the Jumbos capture the Division III Northeast regular season title (15-1-1) while leading the nation in points per game (2.83).
The four host schools for the 2001 NCAA Division III quarterfinal round have announced ticket pricing and availability. Tickets are available now for the St. John’s at Wis.-Superior series. Senior defenseman Jim Smith was named the 2000-01 NESCAC Player of the Year. Smith, a repeat first-team selection who led the Jeffs to the second seed in the conference championship tournament, has 34 points on 12 goals and 22 assists this season.
Connecticut College has suspended its entire men’s hockey team and will forfeit its next three games because of violations of the college’s honor code. According to a college news release, the violations were reported by Camels coach Doug Roberts, and sanctions were handed down following internal judicial review. The release did not specify the nature of the violations.
Middlebury, which captured the first NESCAC men’s championship last year, is the coaches’ preseason favorite to win the 2000-2001 conference title. In meetings held this week, the ECAC approved the realignment of two teams currently playing in the ECAC Northeast. Beginning with the 2001-2002 season, St. Michael’s will become a member of the ECAC East, while Tufts will join the NESCAC.
