MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota scored eight goals on 10 shots in the second period in defeating St. Cloud State Saturday night 11-0.

The eight tallies set an NCAA record for most goals in a period.

“Just a great evening for us,” Minnesota coach Brad Frost said. “Obviously had some bounces go our way with some of our shots.”

Senior Hannah Brandt scored four goals for the Gophers (4-0-0, 2-0-0-0 WCHA), while Sarah Potomak had two goals and three assists on her left wing and Dani Cameranesi added three helpers on her right.

“It’s hard, because Dani and Hannah have that chemistry, and Sarah is a great player, but it’s hard to find chemistry with them while still playing your own game,” Frost said. “Over the last few games, I think she’s been trying to fit in instead of playing her own game and allowing that to develop into some chemistry on the line. Tonight, that definitely happened.”

The second line of Kelly Pannek between Cara Piazza and Kate Schipper clicked as well, with each member scoring, and Piazza doing so twice. She and Schipper had three-point games.

Defenseman Sydney Baldwin had four assists and was plus eight for the game. Brooke Garzone also had a goal.

The Huskies (2-2-0, 0-2-0-0 WCHA) continued to struggle on the penalty kill, as Minnesota converted both of its power plays. Goalie Taylor Crosby came on in relief after starter Katie Fitzgerald was tagged for the first six goals, but Crobsy fared little better, being beaten five times.

Sophomore Sidney Peters needed only six saves to garner her second shutout of the season.

“We can obviously score, and that’s a great thing, but I’m just as impressed or more impressed with our defensive play,” Frost said.

Both squads were content to play a scoreless third period and end matters quickly.

The Huskies will look to rebound next weekend when they host Wisconsin, while Minnesota travels to Ohio State.
