Rust scores in regulation, shootout as Notre Dame gets extra point against Western Michigan

Frank Slubowski stopped 37 shots for Western Michigan but Notre Dame was 2-for-2 in the shootout and claimed the extra point for the CCHA standings after a 1-1 tie on Saturday.

Bryan Rust and Anders Lee scored shootout goals for the Fighting Irish (19-12-3, 15-8-3-2 CCHA), and Steven Summerhays stopped both attempts by the Broncos (18-8-8, 14-6-6-3).

Rust and Western Michigan’s Mike Cichy traded first-period goals in regulation.

Summerhays made 25 saves for Notre Dame, which trails second-place Western Michigan by one point with two games remaining in the regular season.

The teams each got a shootout win from the series — they tied 2-2 on Friday before the Broncos won that night’s shootout — allowing CCHA leader Miami to open up a five-point lead over Western Michigan.
