Umile wins 500th game at New Hampshire behind Speelman’s two third-period goals

Dalton Speelman scored twice and added an assist as New Hampshire coach Dick Umile earned his 500th career coaching victory when his Wildcats beat St. Cloud State 5-3 on Friday.

Connor Hardowa added three assists for the Wildcats (1-0), who outshot the Huskies 39-23.

Umile is the 12th Division I coach to reach 500 victories and is the sixth active coach on the list. (See the list of the top 100 coaches by wins.) He is one of eight to do so at one school.

Speelman scored twice in the first 3:10 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Austin Block added a goal later in the third to give New Hampshire a three-goal lead.

Ben Hanowski had a goal and an assist for the Huskies (0-1), who got 34 saves from Ryan Faragher.

Casey DeSmith stopped 20 shots for the Wildcats.
