The National Picture

It’s natural for everyone to be thinking either regular-season standings or worrying about how their team will do in the conference playoffs. What is easy to lose sight of is the extremely cluttered national tournament picture. Right now, the PairWise rankings are as volitile as ever. Some perrenial powerhouses are living day to day on … Read more

Bracket Discussion, 2/26/07

Now that we’re one week away from NCAA selections, I’ll go team-by-team across the top eight, and examine the best and worst each team can do in the Pairwise Rankings, which mimic the NCAA selection criteria. As mentioned last week, aside from NCAA autobids given to conference tournament winners, the top eight is set. I’ll … Read more

Bracketology 2/23

Things are a little tricky with this week’s version We’re again using the NCAA rankings, but they’re a little out of whack because Castleton is out of the rankings this week as a penalty for not reporting its scores to the NCAA on time. This not only affects the Spartans, but teams that have played … Read more

Danger ahead as season comes to an end…

We all love the Cinderella story in sports. Heck, half the reason the NCAA men’s basketball tournament has such great ratings is due to upsets in the tournament’s opening rounds. With that in mind, there seems to be an unusally high number of what I call “land mines” in college hockey this season. Land mines … Read more

I Stand Corrected…

I missed one playoff tiebreaker scenario that was realized on Saturday. Clarkson would have won the tiebreaker for sixth place in the ECACHL against Yale had Colgate stayed ahead of Princeton. However, Princeton passing Colgate meant that Yale, who beat Princeton, took the sixth seed ahead of Clarkson, who had only tied Princeton. So the ECACHL Quarterfinal … Read more

Bracketology 2/16

All set for version 2.0? We’ll be using the NCAA rankings for this one rather than USCHO PWR. See my previous blog post for the details, but to summarize – we can’t figure out some of the reasoning behind the NCAA rankings, but they’re the official ones, so that’s what we’ll use. AS some point … Read more

First NCAA Rankings Are Out

And here they are. Check back for the latest Bracketology tomorrow. In the meantime, an observation: We know that the NCAA does not apply the selection/ranking criteria equally. You can see this by comparing USCHO’s PWR with the rankings. I’m having a hard time figuring this out. Looking at Mass-Dartmouth, you’d think that the NCAA … Read more

That’s a wrap

That ends things from the TD Banknorth Garden. Yes, it does seem like Groundhog’s Day with BU winning for the 28th time in 55 years. But anyone who had the chance to see Monday title game will tell you that it was one of the more entertaining, edge of your seat games in the tournament’s … Read more

Post-game thoughts…

Some quotes from the players and coaches of both teams after tonight’s thrilling, 2-1 overtime victory for Boston University over Boston College: BU head coach Jack Parker: “I told everyone on the BC team that I thought they deserved better tonight.” “I can’t say enough about John Curry. I can’t say enough about the way … Read more
