Jonathan Deptula, head men’s hockey coach at Wentworth, has announced his resignation effective June 16 to pursue other opportunities outside of coaching.
Deptula completed his second full season behind the Leopards’ bench on Saturday, when Wentworth was defeated by Nichols 6-5 in overtime in the ECAC Northeast Quarterfinals.
“I feel as though I am ready to move onto another chapter in my life,” said Deptula. “I am excited about what I have accomplished here at Wentworth. I have played with some great players and have had the opportunity to coach some great players — and more importantly great people — and it will be sad to be leaving them. Coaching is a lifestyle job and I am looking for a little different lifestyle. I will always have a lot of good memories about my time here.”
“Jonathan has done a great job as our head hockey coach the past two and a half seasons,” said Lee Conrad, director of athletics at Wentworth. “I thank him for everything he has done and wish him nothing but the best as he pursues other options outside of Athletics.”
Deptula played at Wentworth from 1996-2000, and stayed on as an assistant coach after graduating. He was named interim head coach on Jan. 30, 2004 after the dismissal of Bill Bowes, and led the Leopards to their third consecutive ECAC Northeast title. He was named head coach at the end of that season.
In his two-plus seasons as the head coach, he compiled a 36-24-4 record including a 14-12 record this season.
“I would like to thank Jonathan for everything he has done for Wentworth over the last 10 years,” said Bill Gorman, associate athletic director. “He accomplished a lot as a player, assistant coach, and head coach and it has indeed been a pleasure to watch him achieve these accomplishments through the years. I wish we were not making this announcement today, but I understand and respect the decision he has made to step aside.”
“I am very happy with the way my team played this year,” said Deptula. “I think we have a very strong nucleus and whoever takes over next year is going to be very lucky with the great group of players who will be coming back. While it is bittersweet and sad to be leaving, I feel as though it is time to move on.”
Deptula will remain on the job until June 16 to assist during the transition period. A search for his replacement will begin shortly, according to Wentworth officials.
