The search for Michigan Tech’s new coach is expected to go through at least three interviews in the beginning of May.
Huskies assistant coach Mark Maroste, Cornell assistant Jamie Russell and Northern Michigan associate head coach Dave Shyiak will interview with the school’s six-person advisory committee, a source told USCHO.
Those interviews are expected to take place in the early part of next month, and there may be interviews with more candidates afterward, the source said.
Tech is looking to fill the position left by Mike Sertich, who retired on March 18 with two years left on his contract.
The next coach will be the third for those Huskies players who will be seniors next season. They started with Tim Watters, but Watters was replaced by Sertich in November 2000.
Maroste, 40, spent two seasons as Sertich’s assistant. He played 10 years as a professional in Europe after four years at Tech. Sertich gave Maroste his backing to succeed him.
Russell, 36, also is a Michigan Tech alum, having played two seasons for the Huskies (1987-89). He’s been an assistant at Cornell for four seasons with his responsibilities including recruiting and the Big Red’s defense, which last season was tops in nation.
Shyiak, 36, has been an assistant at Tech’s Upper Peninsula rival for eight seasons and was a finalist for head coaching jobs in the last two offseasons — in 2001 at Alaska-Anchorage and last season at Northern Michigan.
