Jayson Megna says he’ll leave Nebraska-Omaha for pro deal

Jayson Megna won’t return to Nebraska-Omaha for his sophomore season after deciding to turn professional, he told the Omaha World-Herald.

Megna said he will decide between three teams — Boston, Pittsburgh and Winnipeg — after receiving six or seven offers.

“Obviously it was a tough decision for me to leave school after playing there for a year, playing with my brother [defenseman Jaycob] and my other teammates,” Megna told the newspaper. “I loved it. But I made a decision that I think is best for me and my career.”

Megna was third on the Nebraska-Omaha roster in both goals (13) and points (31) last season and was the Mavericks’ only representative on a postseason All-WCHA team, earning a spot on the rookie team.

He is also the second Nebraska-Omaha player this offseason to leave with eligibility remaining. Captain Terry Broadhurst signed with the Chicago Blackhawks.

“It’s a huge hit,” Nebraska-Omaha coach Dean Blais told the World-Herald. “That’s another potential 20-goal scorer. The guys we have returning who had just OK years — those guys who had outstanding freshman seasons but fell off as sophomores — are going to have to step it up and put the puck in the net. They’ve got to contribute more.”
