St. Anselm’s College will add women’s ice hockey as a varsity sport for the 2004-2005 season.
The school says a head coach will be named by this July and the team will compete as a club team in 2003-2004.
Athletic Director Ed Cannon says the women will play in the ECAC, once the team attains full varsity status.
“We’ve begun recruiting players and building the program throughout the past year,” he said. “Our goal is to play prep schools and other college club teams during an inaugural season next winter in preparation for a varsity schedule the following season.”
The opening of the Thomas F. Sullivan Arena this summer will give the school an on-campus facility. The men’s team has played in a variety of off-campus arenas.
