On the first shot of overtime, the Quinnipiac University Bobcats (3-0-0) earned a 3-2 overtime decision over the Bentley Falcons (0-2-0) Saturday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center in non-conference action.
“It’s a good win,” said Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold. “Bentley was the better team and competed. Our guys didn’t play well tonight.”
Scott Zurevinski tapped home a deflected pass past Bentley’s Kyle Rank for the game-winning goal, propelling the Bobcats to victory. Zach Hansen carried the puck into the zone and sent a pass across to Eric Lampe at the goal line. Lampe fed one through the slot where Zurevinski picked it up and banged it home 29 seconds into overtime.
“Obviously, the results we’re not too happy with,” said Bentley coach Ryan Soderquist. “We thought we outworked them for a lot of the game and they came on strong in the third.”
The Bobcats opened up the scoring just three minutes into the contest when Reese Rolheiser ripped a shot off the crossbar and into the net for his first collegiate goal.
The Falcons tied the score when Jamie Nudy was able to bang home a rebound shot midway through the first. On the faceoff to the left of Mathieu Cadieux, Bentley won the draw where both Dustin Cloutier and Marc Menzione registered shots on net, but it was the third by Nudy that went past Cadieux.
“Cadieux played well and he battled,” said Pecknold. “We didn’t play well in front of him.”
Quinnipiac regained the lead when Brandon Wong poked a loose puck home in the crease between the legs of Rank. D’Arcy Oakes sent a pass from behind the goal line to Wong who put a shot on net, where it fell in the crease and he poked it through at the 17:38 mark of the first period.
The Falcons tied the score at two when Kane Osmars redirected a shot between Cadieux’s legs on a shot from Dan Koudys at 5:21 of the second period.
In the third period, the Bobcats dominated the shot total 16-9, but were unable to register the game-winning goal.
Quinnipiac swept Ohio State last weekend in Columbus and had Friday night off, while Bentley suffered a 3-2 Friday evening at Northeastern.
“We had a lot of young guys in the lineup,” said Soderquist. “We did play Northeastern last night and had to a play at 4 o’clock today to a team who didn’t play last night. I was extremely impressed with our team and the way we skated with that fact.”
