Junior forward Hailey Clarkson scored a goal and three assists while senior forward Ashley Stewart added three assists of her own to lead the St. Cloud State women’s hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Bemidji State Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Senior forward Kristy Oonincx added two goals and an assist for the Huskies. The win completed the weekend sweep of the Beavers, SCSU’s first since a sweep of BSU on Nov. 26 and 27, 2004, in Bemidji.
Following a scoreless first period, Clarkson opened the scoring for the Huskies at the 12:12 mark of the second period with assists going to sophomore Abby Krause and Stewart. Just over a minute later, Oonincx lit the lamp on the power play for her first goal of the season with 11:07 left in the second period to give SCSU a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Laura Fast scored her third goal of the season with 6:25 remaining to put the Huskies on top 3-0. Oonincx and Clarkson assisted on the scoring play.
Bemidji State cut the lead to 3-1 with a power play goal by Brooke Collins with 5:56 remaining in the second period. BSU managed only five shots on goal thru two periods compared to 27 for the Huskies.
Oonincx ended the scoring for the Huskies with an empty net goal with 1:21 remaining in the game. Clarkson and Stewart assisted on the goal to give each of them their third assist.
St. Cloud sophomore goaltender Kendall Newell made 12 saves while recording her first win of the season. Bemidji State’s Jill Luebke made 25 saves for the Beavers.
BSU went 1-for-10 on the power play, mustering seven shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Huskies went 1-for-7 on the power play with 14 shots.
St. Cloud State (2-4-0, 2-4-0 WCHA) will enter their bye week this week and will return to action on Nov. 4 for a 7:07 p.m. showdown against the Badgers of Wisconsin in Madison. Bemidji State (1-4-1, 0-4-0) will play host to Minnesota State for a pair of conference games next weekend.
