Trailing by a goal with under a minute to play, Quinnipiac tied the game late in regulation on a marker from John Kelly, then won it in overtime on a power-play goal from Matt Froehlich to edge Canisius, 4-3.
The victory allowed the Bobcats to extend their winning streak to three and improve to 12-4-1, 10-1-1 in the MAAC. Canisius dropped to 6-12, 6-6 in the MAAC, losing all three games to the Bobcats this season.
Tied at 2-2 heading into the final frame, Canisius jumped in front at the 12:20 mark. Marc Bouffard stole the puck in the right-wing corner and walked out in front before flipping a shot past QU goaltender Jamie Holden for a one-goal lead.
The Bobcats had trouble getting shots to the Canisius goal late in the game. However, with Holden pulled for a sixth attacker, Quinnipiac capitalized off a draw in the Griffs’ end. Brian Herbert won a draw and slid the puck to Froehlich, who tapped the disc to John Kelly. The freshman winger buried his shot over Canisius goalie Bryan Worosz for the tying goal with just 40 seconds left.
The momentum fully shifted to the Bobcats just prior to the end of regulation. Canisius’ Daryl Pierce took a run at QU forward Ty Deinema and was called for a five-minute major for charging.
In the extra session, Matt Erhart flipped a shot from the left point that Froehlich tipped in for the winning score.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period. Matt Craig tallied a power-play goal just 1:22 into the game off of a pass from Herbert.
Kelly followed with his first collegiate goal at the 16:13 mark, finishing off a feed from Aaron Ludwig for a two-goal cushion. Wade Winkler also assisted on the score.
Canisius rallied with a goal from Ryan Corcoran at 7:24 of the middle frame. Seventy-four seconds later, Rob Martin netted the tying goal.
Quinnipiac goaltender Jamie Holden stopped 38 shots on the night to improve to 8-3-1 on the season. Worosz had 26 saves for the Griffs.
