Roberts, Army Upend MAAC Leader Quinnipiac

Freshman netminder Brad Roberts stonewalled visiting Quinnipiac as Army put an end to the Bobcats’ five-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory before 1,866 at Tate Rink Friday night.

Roberts registered a career-high in saves in the win to help Army (4-7-0, 3-6-0 MAAC) pick up two crucial points in the league standings. His 53 stops were the most by a MAAC goalie this year.

Quinnipiac goaltender Justin Eddy made 43 saves in a losing effort.

Sophomore Chad Mayfield had a goal and an assist for the Black Knights, who ended a nine-game unbeaten streak by Quinnipiac (9-2-1, 7-1-1 MAAC) that was the second-longest in the nation coming into the weekend. The loss also knocked the Bobcats from the ranks of the unbeaten within the MAAC.

Defenseman Mike McLean scored with 54 seconds left in the first period and team captain Joe Dudek tallied 1:30 into the second to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead. Mayfield pushed the margin to three with 52 ticks left in the second.

The Bobcats’ Matt Erhart ended the shutout bid by Roberts on the power play with the visitors’ only goal of the night at 5:25 of the third.

Army and Quinnipiac combined for a MAAC-high 100 shots on goal in the contest, and the Bobcats pelted Roberts with a league-high 24 shots in the third period.
