Freshman Adam Hogg scored his first collegiate goal with 4:27 to play in regulation time as St. Lawrence University beat arch-rival Clarkson University 2-1 in the ECAC hockey opener for both teams at Appleton Arena Saturday night.
Hogg came off the bench and skated toward the Clarkson goal, taking a pass from freshman T.J. Treveleyan and putting a rising shot over the shoulder of Clarkson goalie Mike Walsh at 15:33 to give the Saints the win.
St. Lawrence improved to 2-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the ECAC while Clarkson is 0-3 to start the season and 0-1 in the ECAC.
Saint sophomore goalie Kevin Ackley came up with 18 of his 36 saves in the third period as Clarkson put the pressure on the Saints, but could only get one past the Saint goalie. Golden Knight sophomore Jay Latulippe tucked the puck past Ackley in a scramble in front of the Saint net 47 seconds into the period to tie the game at 1-1.
“Kevin played a tremendous game, both goalies did” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “It was a great effort throughout our lineup and it was great to see the young guys come through on the winning play.”
Sophomore Colin FitzRandolph scored the game’s first goal as he put his own rebound over Clarkson goalie Mike Walsh’s glove at 6:09 of the second. Ackley kept it a 1-0 game with a save on a penalty shot try by Latulippe at 13:20 of the second period.
Walsh finished with 28 saves for the Golden Knights, who had a 37-30 edge in shots on goal. The Knights pulled Walsh for an extra attacker with 1:15 to play, but the Saints were able to hold off Clarkson with some big faceoff wins.
“The last minute seemed to take an eternity,” Marsh said. “Blair Clarance and Fitzy won some big faceoffs for us and we were able to blunt the pressure, but it sure wasn’t easy.”
