Jackie Duerr’s power-play goal at one minute, 54 seconds of overtime lifted Vermont to a 3-2 victory over Boston College Friday afternoon.
The win was the Catamounts’ first of the year while the Eagles were playing their first game of the season.
Vermont was first to hit the net when Liz Reed scored 9:29 into the game off a pass from Hilary Johnson while Boston College was shorthanded. The Eagles knotted the score at one at the end of the second period, getting a goal from sophomore Alaina Clark.
Early in the third period, the Catamounts’ Jenny Agnew notched their second goal. Vermont faced a tough situation, down five players to three with two in the penalty box. Immediately after the second penalty expired and Vermont returned to full strength, the Eagles’ Lindsey Bazzone evened the score.
Boston College entered the overtime period with momentum, but Lindsey Bazzone was called for tripping at 1:54. Vermont capitalized on the opportunity, scoring its second power-play goal of the day. Jackie Duerr (assisted by Heather Fifield) beat Eagle goaltender, Lisa Davis, top shelf for the game winner at 3:39 in the overtime period.
Despite the outcome, the Eagles outshot the Catamounts 28-13. Lisa Davis recorded 10 saves for Boston College, while visiting goalie Tiffany Hayes stopped 26.
Vermont continues its Hockey East road trip Saturday afternoon at Providence. The Eagles travel to North Dakota for two games, Oct. 26-27.
