Minnesota-Duluth Completes Sweep Of Providence

Top-ranked Minnesota-Duluth completed a weekend sweep of No. 8 Providence Sunday, winning 3-1 at PC’s Schneider Arena.

On Saturday the two teams battled it out in a shootout with Minnesota-Duluth prevailing, 6-4. Sunday’s matchup was a tighter defensive battle as the two squads were limited to four goals.

PC’s Kelli Halcisak gave the Friars a 1-0 lead when she finished off a two-on-one breakaway with a wrist shot from the right side that beat UMD goaltender Patricia Sautter low to the right.

The Bulldogs evened the score at 10:29 of the first period as Jenny Potter one-timed a feed at the top of the crease.

The teams battled back and forth before Jenny Hempel put UMD ahead with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 8:22 of the second period.

Hanne Sikio sealed the win for Minnesota-Duluth with the team’s third and final goal at 3:16 of the third period.

Friar freshman netminder Jana Bugden played strong in net, making 34 stops in the loss. Sautter recorded 16 saves for the Bulldogs.

With the win, UMD raised its record to 2-0, while the Friars fell to 0-2.
