Holy Cross edged Connecticut, 3-2, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at the UConn Ice Arena on Sunday night.
The Huskies, in their first regular-season home game, dropped to 0-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 in the MAAC, while Holy Cross earned its first win of the season, improving to 1-1-0 overall, 1-1-0 in the league.
Holy Cross dominated the latter part of the first period, outshooting UConn, 10-4. Brandon Doria notched the Crusaders’ goal on the power play at the 6:48 mark of the period. R.J. Irving assisted on the score.
UConn tied the game three minutes into the second period when D.J. Miller flicked in a rebound on assists from Ron D’Angelo and Mark Murphy.
At the 10:58 mark of the period, Blair Bartlett put the Crusaders on top again for the 2-1 lead. Then, with 2:32 remaining in the stanza, Jon Ames evened the score during a power play opportunity.
UConn picked the play during the period, taking the 12-9 advantage in shots on goal.
Taking the scoring advantage for the third time in the game, Pierre Frenette put the Crusaders up at the 3:27 mark of the last period. In the end, UConn outshot Holy Cross, 30-28.
Jason Carey recorded 25 saves in the loss for UConn, while Matt Norton stopped 28 for Holy Cross.
