Friars Skate Past Huskies

Providence defeated Connecticut, 3-1, on Sunday at PC’s Schneider Arena in an ECAC Eastern League game.

After a scoreless first period, the Friars opened the scoring at the midway point of the second period on a goal by freshman Rush Zimmerman. The Huskies tied the game at 15:33 of the second period on a power-play goal by Megan McLeod. Just over three minutes later, senior Jackie Tamsin scored on the power play to give the Friars a 2-1 lead.

The Friars (16-11-3 overall, 10-5-2 ECAC Eastern) staved off a late UConn (11-17-3 overall, 7-10-1 ECAC Eastern) rally as Jenn Butsch scored an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining. For Butsch, it was her team leading 15th goal of the season.

Zimmerman, who scored two goals against UConn on Saturday, February 16, tallied one goal and one assist Sunday afternoon.

PC outshot UConn, 36-9 as Shannon Murphy made 33 saves in net for the Huskies and Amy Thomas stopped eight shots in the win.
