St. Lawrence Records Second Straight Shutout over Wayne State

St. Lawrence completed a sweep of Wayne State on Sunday a 7-0 win. Gina Kinsbury got the first star of the game with four points (2-2-4). Shannon Smith (2-0-2) and Trisha Powers (1-1-2) also had multi-point games for the Saints.

Smith put the Saints on the scoreboard with the game winner on a power play at 6:30 of the first period. The Saints were unable to score for the remainder of the period, with Warrior goaltender Anna VanderMarliere stopping 15 shots. Saints goaltender Rachel Barrie stopped all five Warrior shots, keeping the score 1-0 at the end of the first.

The Saints came out with a mission in the second and scored three goals within the first five minutes. Gina Kinsbury started it 50 seconds into the second period with an assist from Amy Hewitt. Vicki Hauck followed up at 2:24, before Smith scored again. Kinsbury finished off the scoring for the period with a shorthanded goal after Trisha Powers intercepted a pass and created a two-on-one. Powers slid the puck across to Kinsbury, who placed the puck past VanderMarliere.

Saints freshman goaltender Lea Armendariz relieved Rachel Barrie at 9:07 of the second period. Barrie finished the game with a total of six saves. Lea finished off the second period with seven saves. The second period ended with the Saints leading 5-0.

Marshall scored the first goal of the third period at 9:04. Trisha Powers finished off the scoring for the Saints with a tic-tac-toe play that is certain to make the highlight film. Marshall passed to Kinsbury, Kinsbury slid the puck across to Powers who picked the top left corner with a one-timer.

The Saints outshot the Warriors, 49-21. Armendariz finished with 15 saves. The Saints went 1-for-3 on the power play, while shutting out the Warriors (0-for-5).

The Saints will travel to Ohio on Friday, Jan. 18, to play Findlay at 7 p.m.
