After 29 straight power plays against Miami (9-11-2, 6-8-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) without a goal, visiting Ferris State decided to score with fewer men on the ice to earn a 2-0 victory in Goggin Ice Arena on Saturday night.
After two periods of scoreless action, Chris Kunitz picked up his 19th goal of the season when he lit the lamp on a shorthanded breakaway opportunity at 8:49 in the third frame. This was all the help that Bulldog goalie Mike Brown needed as he stopped 27 shots en route to his fifth victory of the season.
Ferris State added another goal to its tally when Trevor Large finished off a rebounded shot on FSU’s fifth power play of the contest. Large’s goal was the first power-play goal scored by Ferris State in 29 chances against the Redhawks, a streak dating back to last year’s contest on Jan. 12, 2001.
The Bulldogs’ second goal also ended Miami’s streak of 20 penalties without allowing a power-play goal in its last five games.
Despite being outdone by FSU’s Brown in net, Miami junior David Burleigh set a personal best in the contest with 37 saves. Burleigh finished the weekend stopping 65 of 67 Ferris State shots.
