Leopards Hold On Against Thoroughbreds

Junior forward Dave Zelasko and sophomore forward Alex Marinkovich each netted a pair of goals as Wentworth (9-1) held on for a 7-6 victory over Skidmore (1-5) in a nonleague contest at Matthews Arena.

The Leopards jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one period of play, as Zelasko netted a pair, and senior forward Tim Yakimowsky, Marinkovich, and freshman forward Shawn Metheral each tallied goals.

After the Thoroughbreds cut the lead to 5-2, Marinkovich tallied his second of the game to give the Leopards a 6-2 lead after two period of play.

However, Skidmore rallied to score four times in the final stanza, as senior forward Chris Dunn had a goal and an assist and junior defenseman Brian Neary had two assists during the rally. Nonetheless, Wentworth freshman forward Bill Clifford’s first collegiate goal, which had given the Leopards a 7-3 lead early in the third, held as the game-winner.

Dunn finished the game with two goals and two assists, while sophomore Steve Belew and senior Jon Olson made 10 and 17 saves, respectively.

Wentworth junior goalie Jamie Vanek made 40 saves in 58:03 of work. Sophomore Raj Bhangoo played the final 1:03 without facing a shot on goal.

Wentworth, ranked 10th in the nation, finishes the first semester with a 9-1 mark, the best in school history.
