Bowdoin scored on its first three shots of the game, and exploded for six in the first period in a 12-1 victory over Skidmore, as head coach Terry Meagher made history with his 300th career win.
With that distinction, Bowdoin becomes the first Division III team in NCAA history with two 300-win coaches; Meagher (300) and Sid Watson (326). Bowdoin also becomes the fourth team in all NCAA Divisions to boast two 300-win coaches, joining Boston College, Harvard and Michigan State.
Bowdoin took no time getting on the board as Brian Shuman found Michael Carosi streaking up the middle with a beautiful pass to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.
Just 15 seconds later, Bill Busch found the back of the net to give Bowdoin a 2-0 lead. Then, 16 seconds after that, Andy McNerney fired a slapshot from the blueline that found the top corner. The three goals came in a 31-second span.
After two more goals, including one shorthanded, the Polar Bears notched their sixth goal of the period when Carosi tucked a shot just under the crossbar from a tough angle on the powerplay at 14:24.
Skidmore got a goal back on a 4-on-4 situation early in the second period as Michah Deary took advantage of Bowdoin’s keeper Mike Healy being out of position to score at 2:58.
But the Polar Bears regained a six-goal lead at 5:30 as Chris Pelletier put home a loose puck in the crease on the power play.
A beautiful one-timer from Busch to Mantin gave Bowdoin an 8-1 lead at 11:00. Just 24 seconds later, Starke scored after a scramble in front to extend the lead to 9-1. Mike Stevens added his second goal of the game on the power play at 17:50 to get Bowdoin into double figures.
Mayer scored again at 18:58 after a faceoff won by Marty Brisebois to up the lead to 11-1 after two periods. At 12:39 of the third, Brisebois notched a goal of his own to up the lead to 12-1.
