Elmira stops Middlebury for third place in NCAA Division III women’s tournament

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Katie Granato broke a tie in the first period, and Elmira defeated Middlebury 4-1 on Saturday for third place in the NCAA Division III women’s tournament.

Olivia Nyström had three assists for the Soaring Eagles (23-5-1), who went ahead 14 seconds into the game on Maddy Jerolman’s goal.

Johanna Eidensten scored in the second period, and Jessica Prance added a third-period goal.

Kyle Nelson stopped 24 shots for Elmira, which lost to Wisconsin-River Falls in Friday’s semifinals.

Marisa Dreher also made 24 saves for the Panthers (21-6-3), who fell to host Plattsburgh on Friday.

Jenna Marotta scored a first-period goal for Middlebury before the Soaring Eagles took control.
