Nebraska-Omaha Takes OT Win Over Providence

Sixth-ranked Providence lost its second straight game to start the 2001-2002 season. The
Friars fell to 12th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha, 4-3 in overtime at the Maverick Stampede in the consolation game on Saturday, October 13.

In the first period, Nebraska-Omaha jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Jeff Hoggan scored his first goal of the season 3:21 into the game on a power play. The goal was a slap shot from the left side of the ice, just above the circle.

Chris Claffey connected for the second Maverick goal at the 9:52 mark on another hard shot from just within the right circle.

In the second period, the Friars held the Mavericks scoreless and were able to tie the score, 2-2. Mike Lucci scored his first goal of the season on a two-on-two, breakaway led off by goalkeeper Nolan Schaefer at the 2:17 mark. Schaefer cleared the puck wide left on the Providence powerplay to sophomore Regan Kelly, who fed it to Lucci.

Devin Rask tied the game at 6:57 on a short-handed goal as he lifted the puck into the upper left hand corner of the net. He scored off a pass from senior line-mate Drew Omiciol. Both teams finished the period with nine shots each, and remained even on shots for the game,
22-22.

In the third period, the Friars took their first lead of the game at 8:59 on a goal by senior Peter Fregoe. The goal, Fregoe’s first of the season, was lifted into the upper right hand corner of the net.

The Mavericks tied the score, 3-3, with 15:28 on the clock. Fohr tallied the goal in the midst of a scramble in front of the net. The goal proved to be the equalizing factor in forcing the five-minute overtime period . At the end of regulation the Mavericks held the advantage in shots, 34-30.

In the overtime period, the Mavericks took the win with 55.3 seconds remaining in the five-minute session. Greg Zanon was credited with the goal as he was left alone, 15-yards away from the keeper on the right side.

Providence falls to 0-2-1 on the season. They will return home to Schneider Arena to face Sacred Heart on Friday. The Mavericks (1-1-0) will travel to Colgate to face the Raiders in a pair next weekend.
