Wisconsin-Stevens Point bounces Amherst from men’s D-III tourney with five-goal third

Amherst led Wisconsin-Stevens Point 2-1 after 20 minutes and after 40 minutes, but the Pointers exploded for five goals in the third period and advanced to the men’s Division III title game with a 6-2 win Friday night at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

Alex Brooks and Lawrence Cornellier each posted a pair of goals and Nick D’Avolio added a goal and an assist for UWSP.

Joe Kalisz scored the other goal, Kyle Sharkey registered two assists and Brandon Jaeger stopped 32 shots between the pipes.

Brendan Burke and David White scored for the Lord Jeffs and goaltender Danny Vitale made 35 saves.

Stevens Point, national runners-ups in 2014, will play Trinity Saturday night for the national championship.
