Wisconsin-Superior won its 19th straight game Saturday as the Yellowjackets completed a sweep of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the NCHA semifinals.
Superior beat the Pointers 4-3 to advance to next weekend’s NCHA championship series. The Yellowjackets will play host to Wisconsin-River Falls in the title series. The 19 victories is the longest winning streak in the country in Division III and boosted Superior’s overall record to 26-3.
It’s only the second time Superior has swept its arch-rival in nine post-season meetings. It’s the second straight trip to the NCHA finals for the Yellowjackets.
Four different players scored goals for Superior, including Ivan Prokic getting his 22nd of the season. Randy Currie, Rob Ziemmer and Chris Hackett also had goals for the Yellowjackets.
Matt Interbartolo got Stevens Point on the board midway through the first period, but the final goal by Mikhail Salienko didn’t come until just three seconds remained in the third period.
Superior goalie Nathan Ziemski turned away 24 shots in recording his 23rd victory in 26 decisions.
The Yellowjackets haven’t lost since falling 5-2 to Wisconsin-Stout on Dec. 2.
