The Clarkson Golden Knights shutout the Union College Dutchmen, 5-0, in front of a crowd of 2,450 at Achilles Rink.
The Dutchmen’s winless streak now stands at eleven games (0-9-2) including seven games (0-6-1) in the ECAC. The Golden Knights extended their current winning streak to three games.
Clarkson’s Chris Bahen put the Golden Knights on the board first when he scored his second goal of the season at 7:34 of the first period. Matt Poapst and Rob McFeeters both assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning goal as the Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead into the second period.
Clarkson exploded for four goals in the second period to take a 5-0 lead into the final 20 minutes. The Golden Knights held a 14-0 shot advantage after just 4:44 of the second period, during which the Dutchmen were outshot 22-5.
The Golden Knights capitalized on three early Union penalties by scoring two 5-on-3 goals in the first 2:37 of the second period. Murray Kuntz scored the first power-play goal, his seventh overall goal of the season, at 1:41 of the second period.
Poapst found the back of the net just 56 seconds later with another power-play goal to put Clarkson ahead 3-0. David Evans scored the third Clarkson goal just 7:06 into the period with assists from Kent Huskins and Kevin O’Flaherty. Don Smith scored Clarkson’s third power-play goal of the period when he beat Union goalie Brandon Snee at 13:32 of the third to put the Golden Knights ahead 5-0.
Union replaced starting goalie Brandon Snee with 6:28 remaining in the second period. Snee had 27 saves while allowing five goals during his 33:32 minutes between the pipes for the Dutchmen. Sophomore Marc Wise took over the netminding duties for Union for the remainder of the game.
There was no scoring in the third period as Union out shot Clarkson 13-6.
Union goalie Marc Wise had six saves in the final period. He finished with a total of 10 saves in his 26:28 minutes between the pipes.
Clarkson goalie Mike Walsh had 28 saves in the win as he recorded his first collegiate shutout.
Union is now 6-10-3 overall and 3-6-1 in the ECAC. Clarkson is now 8-6-3 overall and 3-2-2 during ECAC play.
