Michigan Tech improved to 3-2-0 on the road and 2-1-0 under new head coach Mike Sertich with an impressive 5-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory at Denver Friday night.
With the victory, the Huskies ended a 10-game losing skid to the Pioneers.
After Tech opened up a 1-0 lead at 10:45 of the first period, thanks to junior forward Brad Patterson, the Pioneers collected goals at 13:02 and 16:22 to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.
Tech exploded for three unanswered second period goals. Freshman Bob Rangus scored with :02 left on the power play at 2:14 to even the game at 2-2, and then Patterson slid the puck between the legs of DU netminder Adam Berkhoel to put the Huskies ahead for good. The goal came at 6:23. Freshman Brett Engelhardt finished off the second period scoring at 13:51 of the period.
The only goal of the final period came in empty net fashion as sophomore Chuck Fabry buried the puck at 18:31 to make the final 5-2.
Brian Rogers made 25 saves in the MTU net to pick up the win.
The Huskies will look to sweep the series Saturday in Denver..
