Sophomore Ron D’Angelo scored two goals to help lead Connecticut past Fairfield, 7-2, on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena.
With the win, the Huskies improved their record to 3-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the MAAC, while the Stags dropped to 1-5-0, 0-2-0 in the MAAC.
UConn’s Mike Boylan opened the scoring at the 12:48 mark of the first period on a slapshot from the point with assists from Eric Nelson and Ciro Longobardi on the power play.
Longobardi then started UConn on a five-goal second-period scoring spree in an eight-minute time span.
His power-play tally came just 3:00 into the stanza on an assist from Mike Anderson. Kurt Kamienski found the back of the net over a minute later with help from Anthony Switek and Anders Johnson. Matt Herhal then fed D’Angelo the puck for his first goal of the night at the 5:49 mark.
Three minutes later, Nelson received a pass from Corey Salvatelli across the blue line, and took a slapshot from the point for the fifth goal of the evening. Evan Schwarz ended UConn’s scoring for the second period at 10:48 with an assist from Boylan.
Fairfield got on the board at the 11:07 mark on a tally from Dan Cotter.
D’Angelo’s second goal came off a Fairfield goalie save at the 15:37 mark of the third period. Michael Goldkind and Herhal assisted on the goal. Nate Bauers recorded the Stags’ second goal of the night at 19:39.
UConn’s Jason Carey earned his first collegiate win in net, recording 22 saves. Fairfield’s Bill Whitfield and Greg Norcross split time in net for a combined 17 saves.
