Wisconsin-Eau Claire won its first varsity contest, defeating Hamline, 10-4, Friday at the Hobbs Ice Center.
The game pitted two teams who were both debuting varsity teams after years with club status.
Maria Falcone scored the first Blugold varsity goal, breaking the scoreless contest at 13:08 of the first period. The Blugolds led 2-0 at the first intermission and pushed the lead to 3-0 before Hamline notched its first
goal at the 1:51 mark of the second period.
The Blugolds led 6-3 after the second period.
On three of Hamline’s four goals, the Blugolds countered within 90 seconds. The Blugolds also scored on three of four power-play opportunities.
Connie Cameron earned the first Blugold hat trick, scoring the team’s fourth, seventh and eighth goals. Sarah Zollers assisted on four goals in addition to scoring one.
