The University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Sacred Heart University played to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, CT. The game marked the home opener for the Huskies and the unveiling of their 2000 MAAC Championship banner before the start of the game. UConn’s record now stands at 0-3-1 overall, 0-0-1 in the MAAC, while Sacred Heart remains at 1-1-1 overall, 0-0-1 in the MAAC.
UConn scored the first goal of the game just 3:11 into the contest. Senior Michael Goldkind netted the power play goal with assists from senior Ciro Longobardi and freshman Eric Nelson.
Sacred Heart responded four minutes later on a Chuck Metcalfe tally to tie the score. Marc-Andre Fourn and Eddy Bourget assisted on the goal.
The two teams played scoreless into the overtime period remaining at the 1-1 tie. The Huskies dominated play outshooting the Pioneers 28-18 on the night.
Freshman Artie Imbriano stopped 17 Pioneer shots while Sacred Heart’s Eddy Ferhi recorded 27 saves in goal.
Connecticut will take to the ice tomorrow night against Sacred Heart at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 5:00 p.m.
