PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Neither side led by more than one goal at Schneider Arena, but the host Friars struck last as Scott Conway tallied the game-winning goal with 48.6 seconds left in overtime at Schneider Arena. Providence moved into sole possession of second place in the Hockey East standings with their first win since Jan. 27 against Northeastern and the Huskies’ loss to Connecticut.
Vimal Sukumaran scored the opening goal 6:05 into the first period and added an assist to join Brandon Duhaime, who recorded two assists, as a multi-point scorer for the Friars. Chase Pearson tied the game for Maine at 8:27, but the Friars took the lead after 20 minutes thanks to a goal by Jacob Bryson.
Maine’s Ryan Smith leveled the score with 1:57 left in the second period, but it was not enough as the Friars held a 42-33 shot advantage and scored on their seventh shot of overtime. Jeremy Swayman made 39 saves in the Black Bear net, while Hayden Hawkey earned his 18th win of the year with a 31-stop effort.
