With the game extended into 3-on-3 overtime, the Ralph Engelstad arena did not see their Fighting Hawks win as Denver’s Ian Mitchell silenced the arena at 1:19 of the second OT. Mitchell, on an even strength goal received the assist from Logan O’Connor to silence The Ralph of 12,002 strong.
North Dakota’s only goal came on the man advantage when Christian Wolanin put it past Tanner Jaillet at 9:36 of the second period. Shane Gersich and Jordan Kawaguchi were credited with the assists on the play. The low scoring game had its opportunities to explode with both sides being on the power play. In a low scoring game like this, the man advantage is amplified and becomes much more potent. UND was 1-3 on the power play while Denver was 0-2. DU’s failure to make a power play goal did not hurt them in the end, but that is also a result of having a rather disciplined night.
Tanner Jaillet made 21 saves for DU and Cam Johnson beat him by one. Denver remains at the top of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with 30 points—two more than second place SCSU. The official score remains 1-1, but DU received the extra conference point.
