GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Ferris State won its first Broadmoor Trophy with a 2-1 win over Minnesota State in the WCHA Final Five on Saturday.
“It’s a bit of a blur, to be honest with you right now,” Ferris State coach Bob Daniels said. “If you’d have told me before the game that we would’ve held Minnesota State to 15 shots on goal, I’d have been extremely surprised.

Gerald Mayhew’s penalty-shot goal late in the second period stood up as the winner.
Minnesota State’s Carter Foguth was called for closing his hand on the puck in the goal crease. Mayhew beat Minnesota State goaltender Cole Huggins on the penalty shot with 26 seconds left.
“Gerald’s our leading scorer and goal scorer, and obviously he was on the ice,” Daniels said. “There were a couple of different options with Kyle Schempp and Jared VanWormer, but it seemed like it was Gerry’s time so I thought I’d go with Gerald at that point. Realistically, he’s our best goal-scorer, best finisher, and he’s also a pretty cool customer.”
Mayhew, who became known for his playoff heroics after a pair of goals to seal Ferris State’s win over Northern Michigan in their WCHA quarterfinal series, didn’t share Daniels’ enthusiasm.
“I was hoping he didn’t pick me at first,” Mayhew said. “I had a move I thought I was going to try that I’ve been trying in practice that’s been working. I just made a move, just tried to shoot top corner, and I was pretty happy it went in.”
It looked to a high scoring game as both teams traded power-play goals midway through the first period.
Bryce Gervais started the scoring for Minnesota State with a shot from the top of the left circle that beat a screened Darren Smith for the only goal the freshman gave up on the weekend.
“We came out and got a break with Bryce’s goal,” Mavericks coach Mike Hastings said. “We couldn’t keep up with their pace. We started chasing the game a little bit.
“I thought they were really hard. They were strong. When they got pucks around the wall, they got support through the middle of the rink. They possessed it, so to me, we were in between a lot. If we didn’t get there early, they were relieving pressure by moving the puck. We were chasing the game most of the night. When you’re doing that, it gets to be a long night.”
Ferris State equalized the game with a goal from Brandon Anselmini.
The Bulldogs felt like they were holding on as the game ended, even as they were on a five-minute power play.
“It was odd,” said Daniels. “It felt like we were trying to kill that power play. I don’t care if you score, but don’t give up the short-hander.”
