BOSTON — Meghan Grieves scored twice and Katie Burt made 29 saves in No. 1 Boston College’s 2-0 victory over Harvard on Tuesday.
It was the Eagles’ first win at Harvard in nearly 10 years, since Feb. 14, 2006.
Burt reached 50 collegiate victories in her 55th start, an NCAA record. At 18 years, 358 days, she also became the youngest goaltender ever to reach 50 career victories. It was also Burt’s ninth shutout of the year.
Grieves scored in the first and second periods for the Eagles (24-0).
Grieves’ first goal came at 11:02.Tori Sullivan rushed up the ice and got a shot on net. Harvard netminder Emerance Maschmeyer made the stop, but Grieves crashed the net and batted the rebound.
After a lot of back-and-forth play in the second period, Grieves scored again when she carried the puck up the left side and got a backhand on net from the lower part of the left faceoff circle that Maschmeyer misjudged. The goal came at 18:26 of the period.
“I thought that [third] line played great,” said BC coach Katie King. “They did everything we asked of them and more. To put two goals in against that team and that goaltender is awesome, so I was happy with how they played, and how the team played as well.
“I thought Katie [Burt] was great. When we needed a big save, she gave us one, especially there at the end on their power play. But all game, she didn’t give up any rebounds, so they didn’t have any second chances on the shots she took. I thought she held down the fort back there and made it easier for our kids to turn around and score goals”.
Maschmeyer stopped 36 shots for the Crimson (10-7-1), which has lost three straight games.
