SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Tanner Kero scored to break a tie midway through the third period, and Michigan Tech opened its season with a 5-3 victory at Lake Superior State on Saturday.
Kero added two assists for a three-point game for the Huskies, who held the Lakers scoreless on seven power-play tries in Damon Whitten’s debut behind the bench.
Whitten left an assistant coach position at Michigan Tech in the offseason to lead Lake Superior State.
The Lakers’ Jason Bird tied the game at 3-3 in the second period, only to have Kero put the Huskies ahead for good 26 seconds later.
