NEW HAVEN, Conn. — After allowing two-third period goals in a 3-1 loss to Brown Friday, Yale came out with a vengeance against the Bears Saturday.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the first period, including three power-play goals in just under two minutes, to roll to a 6-0 win over Brown before a crowd of 3,500 at Ingalls Rink.
Tommy Fallen and Kenny Agostino each scored twice for No. 10 Yale, while Rob O’Gara and Gus Young scored as well. Freshman Alex Lyon made 28 saves for his first career shutout, while Jesse Root had five assists.
Yale finished with four power-play goals against Brown after scoring 13 times on the man-advantage entering the game.
“This is two nights in a row where I thought both sides of our special teams were sharp,” Yale coach Keith Allain said.
It got ugly fast for the Bears, who racked up 36 penalty minutes in the opening period. Zack Pryzbeck was called for a hit from behind on Alex Ward and a game misconduct 1:26 into the game.
A hooking call against Brown captain Dennis Robertson gave Yale an extended two-man advantage and the Bulldogs went up 1-0 on Fallen’s wrister from the point at 3:10.
“We didn’t expect to start out with a five-minute power play, but when we got it, we needed to capitalize,” said Root. “That could have easily swayed the momentum their way if they had killed it off.”
O’Gara jammed a shot home at 3:46 to make it 2-0, with Brown’s Jake Goldberg getting called for hooking during the play.
Fallen’s second five-on-three goal in less than two minutes made it 3-0 and chased Bears’ goalie Tyler Steel from the game, who was replaced by Marco DeFilippo after allowing three goals on seven shots in 5:03.
“We didn’t give ourselves any opportunity to win that game,” Brown coach Brendan Whittet said.
Yale went up 4-0 when Brown’s Matt Lorito’s ill-advised drop pass was picked off by Agostino near Brown’s blue line. Agostino broke down the right wing and backhanded a shot past DeFilippo (34 saves) to make it 4-0 at 13:46.
“It was not smart hockey,” Whittet said. “We’ve got to get back and understand that there’s a time and a place.”
The Bears (8-8-3) didn’t register a shot on goal until 10:09 in the first and was outshot by Yale 20-5 in the period.
Brown had some better looks in the second, but Lyon was up to the task. The freshman had 12 saves in the period, including dropping down to deny the Brown’s Davey Middleton in front of the net and kicking away a good chance by Lappin with Yale shorthanded.
“Adjusting to school and hockey at the same time, that’s been the toughest part, but it’s all been getting better,” said Lyon, who started the season splitting time with Patrick Spano, but has started nine straight games, dating back to Dec. 6.
“He battles hard for us every night and keeps us in every game,” Root said of Lyon. “When we’re not having our best night, he keeps us in there.”
Young scored 28 seconds into the third, while Agostino’s second goal of the night came on the power play and made it 6-0 at 17:51.
NOTES: Brown forward Massimo Lamacchia was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for slew footing after tripping a Yale skater from behind at 14:34.
Ward didn’t return after getting hit in the opening minutes of the game.
