Quinnipiac Tops Clarkson

Three second period goals helped the Quinnipiac Bobcats capture a 5-3 win over the Clarkson Golden Knights at the TD Banknorth Sports Center Saturday night.

Quinnipiac was able to score three goals in a span of 3:21 to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Bobcats tied the score up at one a piece on Dan Henningson’s blast from the slot on a 4-on-3 power play. On a faceoff to the right of Paul Karpowich, The Bobcats won the faceoff to Zach Hansen who fed Henningson. Henningson controlled the puck to find a shooting lane and fired the puck past Karpowich and beat him at 5:24.

“We didn’t play well,” said Clarkson head coach George Roll. “They outplayed us in every facet of the game”

The Bobcats took the lead just over two minutes later with a Chris Myers rebound goal. Andrew Meyer took the initial shot that was blocked, got his own rebound for a second shot saved by Karpowich. Myers found the rebound and put it home for the tally.

“We didn’t clear sticks on the rebounds and our kid was good in net; he had no help,” said Roll.

Spencer Heichman extended the lead to 3-1 when he put home his own rebound goal for his third of the season. Scott Zurevinski took the first shot that Karpowich was able to stop but fell to the doorstep where Heichman put the rebound under the crossbar at 8:45 of the second to cap off the scoring.

As a Clarkson penalty expired, the Knights broke out from their zone on a two on one with Scott Freeman controlling the puck. Entering the offensive zone a Quinnipiac defender went to the ice to prevent a pass but Freeman lifted it over him to Bryan Rufenach for a one timer shot. The Bobcats Dan Clarke got a pad on it but it bounced off and into the net for the 1-0 lead at 6:25.

David Marshall recorded his 68th career goal breaking the previous record of 67 at the Division-1 level. The record was previously held by Chris Cerrella (who graduated in 2001). Standing in front of the net, Marshall rifled the puck short side under the crossbar at 8:41 of the third period on the power play. Henningson and Matt Sorteberg assisted on the goal.

Clarkson then added two goals in the span of 12 seconds.

Shea Guthrie added a power-play marker for Clarkson at 13:20 of the third. Guthrie received a pass behind the net from Chris D’Alvise and found a hole on the glove side to be Clarke.

“We’re definitely happy to get out of here with a win,” said Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold. “We’ve been struggling with the amount of goals we’ve given up and we have to put them away at 4-1.”

On the ensuing faceoff Clarkson dumped the puck into the offensive. Brandon DeFazio picked up the loose puck and fed Lauri Tuohimma on his backhand. Tuohimma corralled the puck and fired a backhand shot on net that beat Clarke under the blocker at 13:32.

“Give Clarkson credit they battled back to 4-3 and then rung on off the bar,” said Pecknold. “We’re fortunate to get a win.”

The Bobcats Eric Lampe added an empty-net goal to seal the victory for Quinnipiac after a three game losing streak, all of which were in overtime.

Clarke made 18 saves in the win, while Karpowich made 35 in the losing effort. The Bobcats finished three for twelve on the power play while Clarkson went 1-for-5.
