Mike Testwuide scored two goals and Scott McCulloch, Chad Rau and Lee Sweatt tallied one goal and one assist each to lead the No. 15 Colorado College Tigers to a convincing 5-1 win Friday before a standing room-only crowd of 7,772 at World Arena.
Goaltender Matt Zaba made 27 saves in CC’s first win over DU in eight contests. Chris Butler scored DU’s lone goal as the Pioneers fell to 9-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the WCHA with their first loss in eight contests. The Tigers improved to 9-5-1, 6-3-0 with their first win over DU since a 3-0 victory on March 3, 2005.
“Give Colorado College credit for playing extremely well tonight,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “The better team won tonight and we’re disappointed with our overall effort. CC really outworked us and we couldn’t match their intensity.”
CC scored one goal in the first period, three in the second and one in the third for its second consecutive win. Zaba improved to 6-4-1 with the win, while DU’s Glenn Fisher stopped 26 shots in his first loss in five games.
McCulloch scored the lone goal of the first period when he scooped up a pass from Jack Hillen in the neutral zone and snapped a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Fisher at 12:02. The Tigers outshot the Pioneers 10-7 in the period.
The Tigers tallied three unanswered goals in the second period to seal their sixth win in seven games. Sweatt, Testwuide and Rau each scored one goal in the decisive period.
Testwuide made it 5-0 at 2:45 of the third period before Butler finally put DU on the scoreboard at 10:15. Tyler Ruegsegger earned the lone assist on the goal after winning the draw in the Tiger zone.
CC outshot DU 31-28 and went 1-for-5 on the power play. DU went 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.
Denver and Colorado College rematch Saturday night, with the drop of the puck set for 7:07 p.m. at DU’s Magness Arena.
