Phil Angell connected on a slap shot from the right point with 2:02 left in regulation to lift No. 13 Nebraska-Omaha to a 4-4 tie with No. 8 Michigan in front of a season-high 8,152 fans at the Civic Auditorium Saturday night.
UNO (18-11-5, 12-9-5 CCHA) holds the nation’s longest unbeaten streak of nine games (6-0-3), which also ties a school record. Michigan moved its record to 18-12-4 and 13-9-4 in the CCHA.
The Wolverines jumped out to 2-0 lead on goals by Chad Kolarik and Andrew Ebbett in the first period before the Mavs answered with Brandon Scero’s power-play tally late in the frame.
UNO tied the game at 2-2 on Bill Thomas’ 24th goal of the year at 3:50 of the second period. Michigan would build another two-goal lead in the second stanza on goals by T.J. Hensick and Travis Turnbull, which came four minutes apart.
The Mavericks then made the score 4-3 heading into the final 20 minutes after Alex Nikiforuk knocked in a rebound at the 13:30 mark while UNO was on the power play.
The Mavs’ Scott Parse had two assists on the night and added on to his nation-leading point total, which now stands at 57 points.
UNO was 2-4 on the power play and killed off all three of Michigan’s chances. UNO also outshot Michigan 32-28 in the contest.
