Senior left wing Jeff Genovy closed out his senior campaign at home during the regular season with a four-goal weekend, including two scores in Clarkson University’s convincing 8-2 victory over Brown University before 2,500 at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.
The Golden Knights, who defeated Yale 3-2 on Friday behind two goals from Genovy, extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) to improve their record to 16-13-3 overall and to 9-9-2 in the ECACHL. Brown, which has gone winless in its last 11 games (8-0-3), falls to 3-18-6 overall and to 2-14-4 in the conference.
Trailing 2-1 early in the second period, Clarkson broke the game open with seven unanswered goals to snap a three-game losing streak to the Bears. Sophomore Matt Isbister started Clarkson’s rally when he finished off a rush from sophomore line mates Steve Zalewski and Shawn Weller, directing in the puck for his second goal of the season at 11:00 of the second period. Senior captain and defenseman Chris Brekelmans gave Clarkson its first lead of the night with the game-winner at 16:10 with a blast from the top of the left circle with sophomore David Cayer assisting. Freshman Chris D’Alvise made it 4-2 after two periods with his sixth goal of the year off an assist from sophomore defenseman Grant Clitsome at 19:34.
Clarkson continued its roll in the final frame with four more goals to complete its highest offensive outing of the season.
Weller tallied his 14th goal of the season at 6:12 connecting off an assist from classmate Nick Dodge to open the third-period fireworks. Clitsome notched his second assist.
Genovy picked up his first goal of the game at 11:31 with line mates D’Alvise and junior Brodie Rutherglen assisting. Junior Max Kolu scored shorthanded off an assist from freshman defenseman Philippe Paquet at 14:25, and Genovy closed out the scoring with his 12th goal of the year at 17:34, a power-play marker off assists from D’Alvise and Clitsome, who finished with three helpers on the night.
The Knights and Bears traded power-play goals to skate to a 1-1 tie through the opening 20 minutes. Brown wasted little time on its first power play when leading scorer, sophomore Jeff Prough scored just three seconds into the man advantage off an assist from classmate Brian McNary at 5:54. Clarkson came back at 14:05 when Dodge, from behind the net, put a perfect pass on the stick of Zalewski in the slot where he connected for his seventh goal of the season.
Brown connected for its second power-play goal early in the second to go ahead 2-1. Freshman Eric Slais knocked in a pass from sophomore defenseman Sean Hurley at the side of the net at 3:03 for his fourth goal of the season. McNary also set up the play for his second assist of the game.
The Knights than rallied back with three unanswered goals in a span of 8:34 to grab a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Making his fourth straight start, sophomore David Leggio improved his record in the Clarkson goal to 9-5-3 with 24 saves as the Knights out shot the Bears 36-26.
