Canisius college goaltender Dan Giffin recorded his second-consecutive shutout as the Golden Griffs won their second-straight game, defeating Connecticut, 5-0, Friday night at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The Griffs have won two straight for the first time this season and improve to 7-17-1, 5-13-1 in Atlantic Hockey while the Huskies have lost nine in a row and drop to 7-16-1 overall and 6-13-0 in the league.
Giffin stopped all 26 shots he faced in the game and has now turned back 91 of the last 92 shots. He hasn’t allowed a goal in 142:34, which is the longest streak since Canisius went to Division I during the 1998-99 season. In his last nine appearances, Giffin (3-7-0) has a 1.73 goals-against average and .947 save percentage.
Senior defenseman Tim Songin scored his second goal of the season when he knocked in a power-play goal at 18:37 of the first period. Both of Songin’s goals this year have come against the Huskies.
The Griffs got two goals in the second period, with the first one coming from sophomore Joel Kitchen on the second assist of the night from junior Michael Cohen. The goal was the seventh of the year for Kitchen, and his first in 10 games. Senior Andrew Dawe gave the Blue and Gold a three-goal lead when he notched a shorthanded goal with 19 seconds remaining in the period.
In the third period, two Griffs got their first goals of the season. Sophomore Greg Brown scored his goal at 2:33 of the third period off assists from Kitchen and senior Josh Henry. Henry scored with 20 seconds remaining in the game off an assist from freshman defenseman John Patera. Henry’s two points were a career high and his only other career goal came Nov. 5, 2004, against Bentley.
Canisius and Connecticut end their season series Saturday night with another game in Storrs, Conn. Faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
