SLU Hangs On To Down RPI

Max Taylor scored the game-winning goal early in the third period and three different players tallied unassisted markers as St. Lawrence defeated Rensselaer, 4-3, in an ECACHL Division I men’s hockey contest at the Houston Field House. With the victory, the Saints improve to 13-7-1 overall and 7-2-0 in league play. The Engineers fall to 9-10-3 overall, including a 3-3-3 record in the ECACHL.

The Saints went up 1-0 early in the first period on a tally by senior winger T. J. Trevelyan. Trevelyan stole the puck from an RPI defenseman in the neutral zone and skated in alone on goalie Mathias Lange, who he beat from between the circles. The Engineers battled back to tie the score less than ten minutes later when junior forward Kevin Broad scored from the bottom of the left faceoff circle for a power-play goal. Senior defenseman Scott Romfo started the play at the blue line and passed the puck up to Reed Kipp, who found Broad skating toward the Saints’ goal.

Junior forward Kyle Rank scored at 2:47 of the second period and sophomore Charlie Giffin at 15:18 to give the Saints a 3-1 lead after two periods. Rank stole the puck on the near-side boards and ripped a wrist shot from the left circle for his ninth of the season and Giffin was credited with his third of the year after his centering pass hit a Rensselaer defenseman and slipped past Lange.

Taylor made it 4-1 in favor of the visitors at 1:48 of the third period. Rank drove the net and took a shot from the bottom of the right circle. The puck rebounded out to Taylor, who put it past Lange. Rensselaer pulled within two goals when sophomore Andrew Lord tipped a Jonathan Ornelas shot past Saints goalie Justin Pesony at 6:53. Senior Keith MCWilliams was credited with the second assist. Freshman Matt Angers-Goulet made it a 4-3 game with less than two minutes remaining, but the Saints held on for the victory.

Pesony finished with 18 saves in net for St. Lawrence, while Lange recorded 30 saves in the loss.
