Robert Morris Earns Weekend Split With Bentley

Senior Kurt Wright recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist to lead Robert Morris to a 5-2 win at Bentley on Saturday afternoon.

Robert Morris (2-2-0, 0-0-0 CHA) went 5-8 on the power play to improve its conversion percentage to a nation-best 36.4 on the year. It also tied the College Hockey America record for power play goals in a game, a feat that has been achieved five times.

Wright scored the opener 12:51 into the contest with a shot from the right point that fooled Bentley junior goaltender Ray Jean. Wright netted his second of the game with just five seconds to go in the first period to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, Wright set up the Colonials third goal at 3:33. He fed sophomore Brett Hopfe, who fired the puck past Jean for his fourth tally of the season.

Bentley cut the lead to 3-1 two minutes later as junior Marc Zwicky jammed home a rebound at 5:27 for his second goal of the season. Three minutes later, Wright netted his third goal of the night and fourth goal of the weekend to restore the three goal cushion for Robert Morris.

The Falcons (2-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA) responded as senior Ryan Lessnau scored his second goal of the weekend to cut the Colonials lead to 4-2.

Robert Morris took away Bentley’s momentum five minutes into the third period as Chris Margott scored the Colonials’ fifth power-play goal of the game to restore his team’s three goal lead.

From there, sophomore Christian Boucher nailed down the win. He finished the game with 33 saves, including 21 in the second period, while Jean and Jason Kearney combined for 28 stops for Bentley.

Junior Doug Conley finished with three assists for Robert Morris, while sophomore Jake Sparks added two assists.

The Colonials return home next weekend to take on Quinnipiac in a two-game series at the RMU Island Sports Center. Meanwhile, Bentley will travel to central New York to take on ECACHL foes Union and Colgate.
