Mass.-Lowell defeated Colgate 3-2 in a non-conference matchup Friday night at Tsongas Arena. The River Hawks raised its record to 4-2-0, while Colgate fell to 7-3-0.
The Riverhawks held a three-goal lead early in the third, but the Raiders refused to pack up and head home, scoring two quick goals midway through the period.
“That’s how huge momentum swings can be,” Head Coach Blaise MacDonald said regarding Colgate’s comeback. “But there are past years where we would have lost those games.”
The game remained scoreless until late in the second period when Chris Fontas tallied his first goal of the year. Cleve Kinley and junior F Mark Pandolfo assisted on the play.
Andrew Martin pushed the UML advantage to 2-0 with his first score of the game just 52 seconds into the third period. Elias Godoy and Peter Tormey set up Martin’s second goal of the season. Martin would net his second goal of the game, a power-play marker, three minutes later when he tipped a Kinley shot past Colgate goaltender Steve Silverthorn.
Colgate’s Tyler Burton answered with his second goal of the season at the eight minute mark to cut the UML lead to 3-1. Zac Tataryn garnered an assist on the play. Kyle Wilson brought the Raiders to within one with his third goal of the season, assisted by Mike Campaner and Dave Thomas.
Chris Davidson made 23 saves to earn the win, while Silverthorn stopped 21 shots before being relieved by Mark Dekanich, who made three saves. UML was 1-6 on the power play, while Colgate was 0-2.
