Army scored four unanswered goals and Connecticut could not recover the Black Knights took a 5-2 decision on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn. With the loss UConn slips to 10-15-7 overall, 7-10-5 in AHA. Army improves to 8-14-3 on the season, 6-12-3 in the loop.
The loss also snaps the Huskies seven-game unbeaten streak.
Army got into the scoring column first after Chris MacLeod found the back of the net just 3:06 into the contest. Army forward Seth Beamer fired a shot from point-blank range that was stopped by UConn net-minder Scott Tomes. However, the rebound was collected by MacLeod who was able to stuff it past Tomes for the score.
UConn outshot Army 14-10 in the second frame and the majority of the Huskies’ chances came from close range. However, UConn could not capitalize as Black Knight keeper Bill Moss stopped shot after shot. Army went ahead 2-0 after MacLeod scored his second goal of the evening 4:06 into the second period. Chris Casey gave Army a 3-0 edge 1:11 later when he rifled a shot just past Tomes’ glove and inside the near post.
After falling behind 4-0 early in the third period, the Huskies made a bit of a run when James Martin scored and then Matt Scherer lit the lamp 1:37 later. Army’s Chad Mayfield would notch a power play goal at the 17:44 mark to ice the victory for the Black Knights.
Tomes made 29 saves in net for UConn and Moss stopped 35 shots for the Black Knights.
