Sophomore wing T.J. Trevelyan scored a pair of second period power-play goals and junior goaltender Mike McKenna made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season as St. Lawrence beat Princeton 5-0.
St. Lawrence gained a split of its weekend series and moved into a tie for ninth with Princeton in the ECAC standings. The Saints 9-15-4 overall and 5-8-1 in the ECAC have the tiebreaker as the two teams played to a 5-5 tie earlier in the season. Princeton dropped both games of its North Country trip and is 5-16-1 overall and 5-9-1 in the ECAC.
St. Lawrence scored goals at opposite ends of the first period and held a 2-0 lead after one. Junior center Colin FitzRandolph scored his second of the season with the game just 2:30 old when his shot from the slot hit a Princeton player in front, flipped up in the air and over the shoulder of Tiger goalie Eric Leroux and into the net.
Adam Hogg then made it a 2-0 game shorthanded with his second of the year with 7.1 seconds to play in the first as he jammed his own rebound back past the Princeton goalie.
Trevelyan, who took over the ECAC goal scoring lead, scored his first of the night as he roofed a power-play shot just 2:10 into the second period. He scored his second power-play goal of the period and 18th of the season just over ten minutes later as he took the puck from Kyle Rank and tucked it in on the short side for a 4-0 lead.
The Saints scored their fifth goal with just 22.1 seconds to go in the game as Matt Macdonald scored his third of the season right off a faceoff win by junior Jamie Parker to make it a 5-0 final.
“The best part of tonight’s game, besides getting the win, was that we had some success on special teams,” said Saint coach Joe Marsh. “We had some rough spots on the power play against Yale on Friday, but I thought tonight’s power play was as good as it has been all season. The penalty kill was outstanding with one shorthanded goal and a couple of other chances that could well have been shorthanded goals as well.
“We need to take this and build some momentum for the stretch run. February has been a pretty good month for us in the past, and hopefully this one will follow form.”
