Just as the leftover turkey and stuffing began to settle in it was time to hit the ice. Western Michigan and Colgate did just that as the Broncos downed the Raiders 4-1 on Friday night.
The Broncos improved to .500 for the first time in over a month behind 23 Scott Foster saves and a perfect effort on the penalty kill.
“I was pleased and I though we executed pretty well,” said WMU head coach Jim Culhane. “Especially our penalty kill.”
Foster stood on his head from the first shot of the game, stoning Kyle Doyle on a breakaway.
“That was a big turning point,” Culhane said. “It adds confidence to the team and he’s on his game.”
Bronco captain Dana Lattery recorded his fourth straight game with a goal and now leads the Broncos with eight.
Pat Dwyer got the Broncos going in the second period with a shorthanded tally as he broke in on David Cann and buried a shot in the upper left corner.
“I’m getting my opportunities and it’s starting to bounce my way,” said Dwyer.
Freshman defenseman Ryan Marhrle continued his breakout year when he ripped a shot under the crossbar on a 2-on-1 break.
Kyle Doyle tallied the lone Raider goal on the night, as Colgate fell to 2-7-0 all-time against Western Michigan.
The Raiders are 1-3-1 against CCHA opponents on the year.
Bronco winger Daryl Moore left the game early in the third, with what appeared to be a wrist injury and did not return.
Foster’s efforts earned him the victory and the first star of the game. Cann, in net for the Raiders, surrendered all four goals on 23 shots.
The Broncos and Raiders will face off again Saturday night, with the puck set to drop at 7:35 p.m.
