Connecticut scored the first goal and later came back from being down a goal to tie the score at the end of the second period, but neither team scored again as the Huskies finished in a 2-2 tie in overtime against American International.
UConn freshman Bill Magnuson, the reigning Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of the Week, scored the first goal of the night, and the Huskies also received a score from freshman Eric Helstedt.
The Huskies move to 2-4-2 overall, and sport an AHA record of 1-2-1. AIC recorded its first point of the season with the tie, and is 0-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.
Magnuson’s slapshot beat AIC goaltender Frank Novello on the first shot of the contest, just 1:29 into the first period. Chris Uber and Eric St. Arnauld tallied assists on the goal.
The Yellow Jackets’ momentum picked up as time elapsed in the first, and they netted a goal 7:07 into the period when C.J. McConnell scored off a pass from Jeremy Leroux.
The two teams went into the break tied at 1-1, but AIC scored quickly in the second period when Ron Miller tallied a goal on a breakaway just 1:16 into play.
Helstedt tied the game up for UConn on an unassisted goal with 12:01 remaining in the second period. The Huskies dominated the ice in the third period, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 17-4, but failed to find the net.
The overtime period saw six shots by AIC and five by UConn, all of which were saved by Novello and Husky goalkeeper Scott Tomes. Novello finished with 40 saves for AIC, while Tomes recorded 26.
The two teams will meet again Saturday in UConn’s first home game of the season. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena.
